Director of Development & Communications

We are a community of educators, researchers, and engineers committed to bringing computer science to all students, particularly those from underserved communities. We are a young, nimble, and growing organization, based in Hollywood. We run in-school, after-school, and summer programs to teach K-12 youth from Title I schools how to code, and help teachers acquire the knowledge and skills to teach computer science classes in their schools. We are committed to ensuring that all students have access to innovative and effective computer science education, with a special commitment to providing opportunities for female, African-American, and Latinx youth to learn coding and be prepared for further study and careers in computer science.
9 Dots is scaling its programs and growing its budget and staff. Annual revenue has increased from $750k in 2016, to $1.6M in 2017, to $2.5M (budgeted) in 2018, and, with the leadership of a Director of Development & Communications, working with the organization’s Executive Director, Board, and staff, 9 Dots anticipates growing to the $5M to $7M range over the next several years.
We are a seeking a Director of Development & Communications who is passionate about the work we do, can communicate our vision clearly and can draw people to support our cause. This staff member will develop and execute 9 Dots’ fundraising plan, and elevate the organization’s fundraising and communications capabilities and assets. She/he will be responsible for significantly growing 9 Dots’ annual budget, including initiating, maintaining, and cultivating relationships with funders, ensuring all grant reporting and proposals are completed, and developing strategies to diversify 9 Dots’ revenue streams.
The Director of Development & Communications, a newly-created position, will be a member of the organization’s Leadership Team, will report to the Executive Director, and will work closely with other team members and program leads. Initially the Director of Development & Communications will be a one-person department (with the support of freelancers), so the desired candidate will be capable of implementing the full variety of development and communications activities, as he/she builds a comprehensive development and communications program.
Provides leadership for all fundraising and communications activities. Develops and executes 9 Dots’ annual fundraising plan
Analyzes results and effectiveness of the development plan to develop results-driven strategy
Supports the Executive Director in external communication/brand positioning strategies
Builds fundraising culture and fundraising capacity of the Board
Selects, acquires, and implements a donor/CRM database system
Development and Communications
Cultivates and solicits new individual, corporate, and foundation supporters; effectively utilizes the Executive Director, Board members, and leadership staff in this process
Stewards individual, corporate, and foundation support at all levels of giving
Identifies, secures, and manages local, state and federal governmental funding
Oversees the creation and management of fundraising events
Manages the day-to-day development operations, including oversight of proposal and grants tracking database, outreach, gift administration and processing, donor recognition, budgeting, and record keeping
Maintains accurate and complete records and files for fundraising events
Manages marketing and promotion for all fundraising initiatives
Coordinates the development and production of the annual report, e-newsletters, and other communications materials
Develops and implements social media and media relations strategies

4 years + experience in development and fundraising in the nonprofit sector
Track record of growing annual revenue
Ability to think strategically and creatively, as well as to implement and follow through
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to create relationships with strategic partners/donors/community leaders
Excellent written and oral communications skills
Experience in marketing/communications
Experience and comfort using technology to manage projects and workflows
Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail
Completes work seamlessly and independently; resourceful and flexible
Strong self-manager, solid executor, and proactive communicator
Experience in education
Experience leading development in Los Angeles
